Stuart Bish Photography & Studio Del - Penticton BC
The Stuart Bish Photography / Studio Del building - known to the Owners as "Box Camera" - is a very tailored "little" building that is comprised of :
: 1700 sf basement principally for plotting, laminating equipment and frame / glazing assembly
: Reception and Camera Room of 1000 sf that adjoins an exterior photography courtyard
: a physically separated 240 sf Frame Cutting Wood Shop for dust / sound control
: a Penthouse that hosts a Hairstyling Salon
The building compliments an existing 1936 "Moderne" Heritage Residence and was constructed to create a formal exterior photography courtyard for the business and to relocate the Owner's businesses from the Residence.
The project was designed to be able to be entirely serviced via a 200 A electrical supply - HVAC is accomplished via 3 air-air Heat Pumps. Walls are insulated to R40 - the Penthouse Roof is insulated to R50.
The Penthouse features an 8' cantilevered solar shade trellis of locally milled woods, which ensures complete shading of the window wall from the intense Okanagan Valley summer sunshine.
The project was produced as an Owner / Builder endevour with the assistance of the architect who is also a member of the Owner's family.
The project was selected as "Best in Retail" in the 2015 SICA Commercial Building Design Awards programme and achieved a very favourable Unit Cost from astute control of the cost of construction.
